How to create this look
To achieve great beachy looking hair, first we need to look at the amount of natural movement in the hair. If there is existing wave or curl, we can simply apply a curl separating product such as Kms California Curl-Up Control Creme for texture or for a drier look, apply Kms California Sea Salt Spray which achieves a similar result to natural sea water but with a much more cosmetic feel. Try layering products up by applying firstly, leaving hair to dry and then re-applying the product. This will allow more of a product build-up than would be possible in one application. A good way to apply product is to rub it in the palms of your hands and then apply it to the hair by gently scrunching it in until you can feel the product is coating all of the hair. Try twisting the hair upwards in large sections until you have quite a tension on the hair. Then let it go and pull the hair gently into the desired shape. Alternatively, leave the hair in the twists overnight and pull them out in the morning to style.
Hair that has not been shampooed for a day or two is perfect for a beachy texture as it will be already starting to separate naturally.
For hair that has minimal wave or curl, try wrapping the mid-lengths around a unicorn shaped tong or a big barrel tong. Take large random sections. Don’t curl the ends though as this will look too styled. Apply a texturiser such as Kms California Dry Wax which is my product of the year. We have used it at so many shows and shoots. It sprays out like a hairspray but it has a pliable hold and texture with minimal shine. Once the hair has cooled, rake your hands through your hair to loosen it up and style it. The tonging can then exist as a base for more product application such as Sea Salt Spray or Curl-Up Control Creme which would naturalise the movement in the hair further. If you find you have created too much curl, clamp straightening irons on to big sections and pull loosely to relax it.
By tipping your head upside down and shaking the hair you can create more volume. Just put your hands in at the roots and pull your fingers out a couple of inches and shake. Don’t however, pull your hands right through the hair as this will break up the separation. For more separation, apply product to the mid-lengths and ends whilst the hair is upside down . Flick the hair back up and place to finish.
For a drier and straighter, more voluminous look, brush through the hair with a Mason -Pearson or Paddle brush. The hair will literally just expand outwards.
